Beauty and brains…

If stereotypes about girls and math still exist (as we know they do) and we, as a country, need to encourage girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), then why in the world would we chose to present Amy Farrah Fowler like this…

    • I wish I knew the answer to that (although I probably do). I can totally understand picturing Amy as they do on the show if she presented herself like that in “real life” but she doesn’t, so why change her? And go to extremes (in my opinion) to do so?

  1. First let me say that I love The Big Bang Theory show. I think that Amy represents all the girls out there that are “nerds” like Sheldon and show that just because you are smarter than most in science or math you can still have a social life among your peers. The flip side is that Bernadette is just as smart if not smarter than Amy and she is about as cute and girly as you can get. So I think both types of girls are represented and shown how they are looked up to my others. As far as casting goes I think Amy’s character is perfect for Sheldon.

  2. Hi Shirley,
Thanks for visiting and thanks for your thoughts and comments. I agree that Amy is perfect for Sheldon but I think the show makes her way too awkward. My point is that they had a chance to make being smart an “attractive thing” and in my opinion, they chose not to and…in “real life” she is beautiful and smart!
